A workshop on hohup, an embodied cyclical rhythm concept from Korean drumming.
Chris Hale is an electric bass player who is active in contemporary jazz and improvisation. As faculty member of the Australian Art Orchestra's Creative Music Intensive, Hale has taught a breathing and movement method for creating rhythm from called hohup alongside master Korean musicians. This workshop involves an introduction to hohup, and some of its key principles of embodied motion, constant flow and gravity within a cyclical approach to rhythm. Through kinaesthetic awareness of others, rhythms that would be considered advanced in Western music theory frameworks become easy to execute.

accessibility
Goolugatup Heathcote’s gallery and project space is wheelchair accessible and ACROD parking is available nearby. Main entry is 1.4m wide, and accessible toilet doors are 0.9m wide.
The precinct’s street address is 58 Duncraig Rd, Applecross WA. It is 10 minute drive from the CBD, with ample parking on site. The closest train station is Canning Bridge, and the closest bus route is the 148.
The workshop involves movement (swinging of arms, jumping, clapping) and making sound with your voice. All of the movements have accessible alternatives (the movements are simply ways of visualising the core concepts, which are more internal, so you can explore your own).
